Learning French is not an easy task to undertake, even after having studied it at school, especially if school is a long ago distant memory. But if you want to live in France I am a firm believer that you should try your best to learn the language. That said, the task seems to come a lot easier to some than others. I honestly believe that there is such a thing as natural aptitude and that, unfortunately, I haven't got it.
But what I have got is access to some very good training materials and programs that I have used since arriving in France and these have, for now at least, helped me to get by. A fluent French conversationalist I am not, well not yet anyway, but I do seem to be able to manage reasonably well on a day to day basis and drawing on help from friends occasionally when I need a bit more French than I can manage.
That is probably not the best endorsement you will get for French language courses, but it is an honest one. If you want to know more about my Learning French DVD and the other programs I have used to date then you can go and take a look at the Squidoo lens I have created on the topic via the link provided in this paragraph.
I think if you have natural aptitude you will find these tools enormously helpful and if you don't, then they should at least help you get by. Hope you find the lens useful.

I know what you mean, Brian. I studied French in high school, even had a private tutor. I took French Business in college and very nearly earned myself a minor.
ReplyDeleteLanguage is indeed one of those things you have to keep up with because it goes away.
I'm envious you have the language and culture all around you :)
I've been desperately trying to learn French (mostly unsuccessfully) since I met my French fiance (not husband) five years ago. So I've purchased tons of books, CDs, computer software for that purpose. Without a doubt Michel Thomas' CDs are the best resource Ive found and I recommend it. Cynthia in the French Alps
ReplyDeleteHi Victoria, I think immersing yourself in the language and culture of the country you are trying to learn the language for is probably going to be the best way to learn. So yes I am very lucky, but if I am honest still struggling.
ReplyDeleteHi Cynthia, yes I am similar to you, I think it is that natural aptitude thing. Still worth persevering though.
